Liposuction in Turkey, Antalya

Liposuction is one of the most widely recognised procedures in aesthetic plastic surgery. However, it is also one of the most frequently misunderstood.

Many patients associate liposuction with losing weight. Others believe that removing more fat automatically produces a better result.

Neither assumption is correct.

I am Dr Gökhan Özerdem, Specialist in Aesthetic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Antalya, Turkey. With more than 25 years of surgical experience, I perform liposuction to improve body contours by removing selected areas of excess subcutaneous fat.

My approach focuses on proportion, tissue quality and patient safety.

Liposuction is a body-contouring operation, not a weight-loss treatment.

The objective is to improve the relationship between different areas of the body while preserving smooth, natural contours.

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes subcutaneous fat through small incisions using specialised cannulas.

Subcutaneous fat is the fatty tissue located beneath the skin.

During liposuction, a cannula is introduced into the selected area and connected to a suction system.

The surgeon removes fat in a controlled manner to improve the contour.

Common treatment areas include:

  • Abdomen
  • Waist
  • Flanks
  • Hips
  • Outer thighs
  • Inner thighs
  • Upper arms
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Submental area beneath the chin

Liposuction can treat one area or several areas during the same operation, provided the planned procedure is medically appropriate.

However, the amount of fat removed is not the only factor determining the result.

The distribution of the remaining fat, skin elasticity and underlying body structure are equally important.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction is generally most suitable for patients who have localised fat deposits that remain despite a reasonably stable body weight.

A suitable candidate typically has:

  • Localised subcutaneous fat
  • Relatively stable body weight
  • Reasonable skin elasticity
  • Realistic expectations
  • Suitable general health
  • No major untreated medical condition that would make elective surgery unsafe

Patients with substantial loose skin may not achieve a satisfactory result from liposuction alone.

Likewise, patients seeking major weight loss should not regard liposuction as a substitute for appropriate weight management or bariatric treatment.

My Approach to Liposuction

Before recommending liposuction, I examine the relationship between fat distribution, skin quality and the underlying body contour.

I assess:

  • Location of fat deposits
  • Thickness of subcutaneous fat
  • Skin elasticity
  • Existing asymmetry
  • Muscle contour
  • Body proportions
  • Previous surgery
  • Weight stability
  • Patient expectations

I also consider what the operation cannot correct.

For example, a patient may have abdominal fullness caused by several different factors:

  • Subcutaneous fat
  • Visceral fat
  • Loose skin
  • Abdominal muscle separation
  • A combination of these conditions

Liposuction primarily addresses the subcutaneous fat component.

It does not correct all causes of abdominal protrusion.

The first step is identifying which tissue is responsible for the contour problem.

Liposuction Is Not Weight-Loss Surgery

This distinction is particularly important.

Liposuction removes fat from selected areas of the body, but it does not treat obesity or the metabolic consequences of excess body weight.

It does not replace:

  • Appropriate nutrition
  • Physical activity
  • Weight management
  • Medical treatment for obesity
  • Bariatric surgery when indicated

Patients may notice changes in clothing fit and body measurements even when their weight changes relatively little.

For this reason, I evaluate liposuction results primarily through body contour rather than the number displayed on a scale.

Does Removing 5 Litres of Fat Mean Losing 5 Kilograms?

No.

This is a common misunderstanding.

Five litres of aspirated material does not mean that the patient has lost five kilograms of pure body fat.

The aspirated material may contain varying proportions of:

  • Fat
  • Infiltration fluid
  • Blood
  • Other tissue fluids

In addition, fat and water do not have identical densities.

Postoperative swelling and fluid changes can also influence body weight.

Therefore, the volume removed during liposuction cannot be translated directly into an equivalent reduction on the bathroom scale.

I explain this because patients should not judge surgical success according to the number of litres removed.

How Much Fat Can Be Removed Safely?

There is no single volume that is appropriate for every patient.

The amount of fat that can be removed safely depends on:

  • Patient weight and general health
  • Treatment areas
  • Total aspirate volume
  • Fluid management
  • Duration of surgery
  • Associated procedures
  • Anaesthetic considerations
  • Hospital monitoring

Larger-volume liposuction requires particularly careful planning and may involve additional risks.

I do not consider removing the maximum possible amount of fat to be an appropriate surgical objective.

The correct amount is the amount that can be removed while maintaining patient safety and producing an appropriate contour.

Liposuction Techniques: Is One Technology Better?

Patients frequently ask whether they should choose VASER, laser liposuction, power-assisted liposuction or conventional liposuction.

These terms describe different technologies used to assist fat removal.

Each has specific characteristics, but the device itself does not guarantee a better result.

The surgeon’s judgement, anatomical understanding, technique and patient selection remain essential.

No single liposuction technology has been proven universally superior for every patient and every treatment area.

Traditional Suction-Assisted Liposuction

Traditional liposuction uses a cannula connected to suction.

The surgeon moves the cannula through the selected fat layer to remove tissue in a controlled manner.

This technique remains an established method of body contouring.

When performed appropriately, it can produce effective results without relying on an additional energy-based device.

VASER Liposuction

VASER is a form of ultrasound-assisted liposuction.

Ultrasound energy is used to help disrupt fat before removal.

It may offer technical advantages in selected situations, depending on the tissue characteristics and surgical objective.

However, VASER is not a guarantee of:

  • Better skin tightening
  • Faster recovery
  • Less bruising
  • Perfect abdominal definition
  • A permanently superior result

Energy-assisted technologies also have their own risks, including thermal injury if used improperly.

I believe patients should choose a surgeon based on qualifications and judgement rather than advertising claims about a particular machine.

Laser Liposuction

Laser-assisted liposuction uses laser energy as part of the fat-treatment process.

Some systems are promoted for their potential effects on tissue contraction.

However, results vary, and energy-based treatment cannot reliably replace skin excision when substantial loose skin is present.

Laser technology also introduces specific considerations related to heat and tissue injury.

It should not be regarded as automatically safer or more effective than other methods.

Power-Assisted Liposuction

Power-assisted liposuction uses a mechanically moving cannula to assist fat removal.

It may make certain aspects of fat extraction easier for the surgeon, particularly in selected areas.

However, the final result still depends on appropriate planning and controlled fat removal.

The technology assists the operation; it does not replace surgical skill.

Liposuction of the Abdomen

The abdomen is one of the most commonly requested treatment areas.

However, not every protruding abdomen is suitable for liposuction alone.

During consultation, I assess:

  • Subcutaneous fat thickness
  • Skin elasticity
  • Abdominal wall contour
  • Previous pregnancies
  • Previous abdominal surgery
  • Muscle separation
  • Presence of significant loose skin

If the main problem is localised subcutaneous fat with adequate skin elasticity, liposuction may be appropriate.

If the patient has substantial loose skin or abdominal muscle separation, tummy tuck surgery may be a better option.

Liposuction of the Waist and Flanks

Fat deposits around the waist and flanks can influence the transition between the upper body, abdomen and hips.

These areas are often described as love handles.

Liposuction may improve waist definition in suitable patients.

However, the final waist shape is also influenced by:

  • Ribcage
  • Pelvic width
  • Muscular structure
  • Fat distribution
  • Skin quality

Liposuction cannot change the underlying skeleton.

The objective is to improve proportions within the limits of the patient’s anatomy.

Liposuction Before and After

Body Contouring Results

[LIPOSUCTION BEFORE & AFTER GALLERY]

Before and after photographs can demonstrate changes in:

  • Waist contour
  • Abdominal shape
  • Flank fullness
  • Hip and thigh proportions
  • Arm contour
  • Back contour

However, the result depends on fat distribution, skin elasticity, underlying anatomy and healing.

Patients should not assume that the same amount of fat removal will produce the same contour in different bodies.

Previous patient photographs should be viewed as examples rather than guarantees.

Liposuction of the Hips and Thighs

Fat distribution around the hips and thighs varies considerably between individuals.

Some patients have localised fullness on the outer thighs.

Others are concerned about the inner thighs or the transition between the hips and legs.

These areas require careful planning because excessive fat removal can create contour irregularities.

Skin elasticity is particularly important in the inner thighs.

If significant skin laxity is present, liposuction alone may worsen the appearance of loose skin.

In selected patients, thigh lift surgery may be more appropriate.

Arm Liposuction

Liposuction can reduce selected fat deposits in the upper arms.

However, the quality of the overlying skin determines how well the arm contour will improve.

Patients with good skin elasticity may achieve a more proportionate arm shape.

Patients with significant loose skin, particularly after major weight loss, may require arm lift surgery instead.

Removing fat without addressing substantial skin excess can leave the arms looking deflated.

Back Liposuction

Localised fat deposits on the back may create folds or fullness around clothing and bra lines.

Liposuction can improve selected areas when the skin has sufficient elasticity.

However, not every back fold consists primarily of removable fat.

Skin laxity and the natural structure of the back also influence appearance.

For this reason, I examine the entire area before recommending treatment.

Chin and Neck Liposuction

Submental liposuction removes selected fat deposits beneath the chin.

It may improve the transition between the chin and neck in suitable patients.

However, a poorly defined jawline can also result from:

  • Skin laxity
  • Neck muscle changes
  • Chin anatomy
  • Age-related tissue descent

In patients with significant neck ageing, liposuction alone may be insufficient.

I may consider it as part of a broader facial rejuvenation plan, including face and neck lift surgery, when appropriate.

Liposuction for Men

Men commonly request liposuction for areas such as:

  • Abdomen
  • Flanks
  • Chest
  • Waist
  • Submental area

Male body-contouring goals often differ from female goals.

For example, the objective may be to improve abdominal and waist definition while preserving a natural masculine torso.

However, liposuction does not create abdominal muscles.

The appearance of muscular definition depends on underlying anatomy, muscle development, fat thickness and skin quality.

In men with true gynecomastia, liposuction alone may not adequately remove glandular breast tissue.

In these patients, glandular excision may also be necessary.

Liposuction or Tummy Tuck?

These procedures address different anatomical problems.

LiposuctionTummy Tuck
Removes selected subcutaneous fatRemoves excess abdominal skin and can address abdominal wall laxity
Uses small incisionsRequires a longer abdominal incision
Does not repair separated abdominal musclesCan include rectus muscle repair when indicated
Best suited to patients with adequate skin elasticityOften appropriate when significant loose skin is present
Improves fat distribution and contourReshapes the abdominal area more extensively

Some patients benefit from a combination of both procedures.

In my practice, I frequently consider lipoabdominoplasty when abdominal skin excess and localised fat deposits need to be addressed together.

The appropriate operation depends on the patient’s anatomy.

Does Liposuction Tighten Loose Skin?

Liposuction removes fat. It does not directly remove excess skin.

After fat removal, the skin may contract to some degree.

The amount of contraction depends on:

  • Age
  • Skin elasticity
  • Degree of stretching
  • Amount of fat removed
  • Treatment area
  • Individual healing

Patients with good skin elasticity may experience satisfactory adaptation.

However, patients with significant loose skin should not expect liposuction to produce the same result as surgical skin removal.

Removing fat from beneath loose skin does not automatically make that skin tight.

Can Liposuction Remove Visceral Fat?

No.

Liposuction primarily removes subcutaneous fat, which lies beneath the skin.

Visceral fat is located deeper within the abdominal cavity, around internal organs.

It cannot be removed through standard aesthetic liposuction.

A patient may have a prominent abdomen caused largely by visceral fat despite having relatively little subcutaneous fat.

In such cases, liposuction may provide limited improvement.

This is one reason why careful examination is necessary before recommending abdominal liposuction.

Does Liposuction Remove Cellulite?

No.

Liposuction is not a reliable treatment for cellulite.

Cellulite is influenced by the relationship between fat, skin, fibrous connective tissue and underlying anatomy.

Although removing fat may change the overall contour, it does not reliably correct the structural causes of cellulite.

In some patients, contour irregularities or skin laxity may make cellulite more noticeable after fat removal.

I do not recommend liposuction as a primary treatment for cellulite.

Does Liposuction Remove Stretch Marks?

No.

Stretch marks are changes within the skin.

Because liposuction removes fat beneath the skin, it does not remove stretch marks.

If stretch marks are located within skin that is surgically removed during a tummy tuck, some of them may be removed with that skin.

However, liposuction alone does not eliminate stretch marks.

Will Fat Return After Liposuction?

Liposuction permanently removes a proportion of the fat cells from the treated area.

However, this does not mean that future weight gain becomes impossible.

Remaining fat cells can enlarge if the patient gains weight.

Fat can also accumulate in treated and untreated areas according to the individual’s physiology.

For this reason, maintaining a relatively stable body weight is important for preserving the result.

Liposuction changes fat distribution. It does not make the body immune to weight gain.

Can Liposuction Be Repeated?

Revision or additional liposuction may be possible in selected patients.

However, previous liposuction changes the tissue.

Scar formation, irregularities and altered fat distribution can make subsequent surgery more complex.

I do not recommend repeated liposuction simply because a patient wants increasingly aggressive fat removal.

Any additional procedure should be based on a clear anatomical indication and realistic expectations.

Can Liposuction Be Combined with Other Operations?

Yes, in selected patients.

Liposuction may be combined with procedures such as:

  • Tummy tuck
  • Gynecomastia surgery
  • Arm lift
  • Thigh lift
  • Selected facial or neck procedures

However, combining operations increases total surgical time and may increase physiological stress.

The decision depends on:

  • General health
  • Total operative duration
  • Planned treatment areas
  • Expected blood loss
  • Fluid management
  • Thromboembolic risk
  • Recovery requirements

I do not believe that performing the maximum number of procedures during one anaesthetic is always the safest approach.

In extensive cases, dividing surgery into separate stages may be more appropriate.

Anaesthesia and Hospital

I perform major liposuction procedures under appropriate anaesthesia in a fully equipped hospital in Antalya, Turkey.

The anaesthetic plan depends on the treatment areas, expected aspirate volume, duration of surgery and patient health.

Before surgery, appropriate medical assessment is completed.

Liposuction involves important considerations related to fluid balance, blood loss, temperature regulation and postoperative monitoring.

For this reason, the procedure should not be judged solely by the small size of the incisions.

Recovery After Liposuction

Swelling, bruising, tenderness and temporary changes in sensation are common after liposuction.

The treated areas may initially feel firm or uneven.

Some patients also experience temporary fluid drainage from the small incisions during the early postoperative period.

These changes usually improve progressively.

Recovery depends on:

  • Number of treated areas
  • Extent of fat removal
  • Individual healing
  • General health
  • Whether other procedures were performed

The early postoperative contour does not represent the final result.

Compression Garments After Liposuction

I commonly recommend a compression garment after liposuction.

Compression can help support the treated tissues and manage postoperative swelling.

The garment should fit appropriately without creating excessive pressure or skin injury.

The type and duration of compression depend on the operation.

I provide individual instructions because different treatment areas may require different postoperative care.

When Can I Return to Work?

The appropriate time depends on the extent of liposuction and the physical demands of the patient’s occupation.

Patients who undergo limited treatment may recover more quickly than those who have multiple areas treated.

Desk-based work can often be resumed earlier than physically demanding work.

However, swelling and discomfort may continue after a patient has returned to ordinary daily activities.

When Can I Exercise After Liposuction?

Walking is encouraged during recovery, provided the patient is medically stable.

Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and high-impact activity should be resumed gradually.

The timing depends on the extent of surgery and individual healing.

I advise patients not to interpret early improvement in discomfort as complete tissue recovery.

When Will I See My Final Liposuction Result?

Liposuction results develop gradually.

During the early recovery period, swelling can conceal the improvement.

As swelling decreases, the body contour becomes more apparent.

Some areas may remain firm or swollen for longer than others.

Meaningful improvement often becomes visible over the first several months, while final tissue settling can take longer.

The exact timetable varies according to the treatment area and extent of surgery.

Liposuction Scars

Liposuction uses small incisions for cannula access.

These are generally positioned in locations that allow appropriate access while keeping scars relatively discreet.

However, every incision leaves a scar.

Initially, scars may appear pink or darker than the surrounding skin.

They usually become less noticeable as they mature.

Scar quality depends on individual healing and other factors.

No surgeon can guarantee completely invisible scars.

Risks and Limitations of Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure and carries recognised risks.

Potential complications include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Haematoma
  • Seroma
  • Prolonged swelling
  • Changes in skin sensation
  • Contour irregularities
  • Asymmetry
  • Loose or uneven skin
  • Unfavourable scarring
  • Skin injury
  • Fat necrosis
  • Fluid imbalance
  • Anaesthetic complications
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Fat embolism
  • Injury to deeper structures
  • Need for further surgery

Large-volume liposuction and extensive combined procedures require particularly careful risk assessment.

Although serious complications are uncommon, some can be life-threatening.

I discuss the relevant risks and limitations before surgery.

Liposuction in Turkey for International Patients

Travelling to Antalya for Body Contouring Surgery

International patients considering liposuction can begin with a preliminary assessment before travelling to Turkey.

My team may request:

  • Medical history
  • Current medication
  • Height and weight
  • Weight stability
  • Previous surgery
  • Relevant medical conditions
  • Smoking history
  • Photographs of the treatment areas

This information helps with preliminary evaluation.

However, photographs cannot reliably determine skin elasticity or the precise nature of abdominal fullness.

The final surgical plan is confirmed after I examine you personally in Antalya.

How Long Should I Stay in Antalya After Liposuction?

The appropriate length of stay depends on the extent of the operation.

For many international patients undergoing substantial liposuction, I generally recommend planning approximately 7–10 days in Antalya.

However, limited procedures may require a different schedule, while extensive or combined surgery may require a longer recovery period.

The timing of travel should depend on early postoperative assessment.

Long-distance flights also require consideration of blood-clot risk and mobility.

I prefer to confirm travel readiness after evaluating the patient’s recovery.

Why Choose Dr Gökhan Özerdem for Liposuction?

Liposuction requires more than the ability to remove fat.

The surgeon must understand:

  • Which fat deposits can be treated
  • How much fat should remain
  • Whether the skin can adapt
  • How neighbouring areas relate to each other
  • How to avoid excessive fat removal
  • When liposuction alone is insufficient
  • When skin excision is necessary
  • How to manage surgical and anaesthetic risks

With more than 25 years of surgical experience, I approach liposuction as a procedure for improving body proportions rather than achieving the greatest possible aspirate volume.

I also believe patients should understand the limitations of the operation.

Liposuction does not reliably correct cellulite, remove stretch marks, repair separated abdominal muscles or eliminate significant loose skin.

And no device can replace appropriate patient selection and surgical judgement.

The success of liposuction should be measured by the quality of the resulting contour, not by the number of litres removed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Liposuction

Is liposuction a weight-loss operation?

No. Liposuction is designed to improve body contours by removing selected areas of subcutaneous fat. It is not a treatment for obesity.

How many kilograms will I lose after liposuction?

Weight change varies and is not the main measure of success. The volume of aspirated material does not correspond directly to the same number of kilograms of body-weight loss.

Does removing five litres of fat mean losing five kilograms?

No. Aspirated material may contain fat and other fluids, and its volume cannot be converted directly into an equivalent reduction in body weight.

What is the best liposuction technique?

There is no single technique proven universally superior for every patient. The appropriate method depends on the anatomy, treatment area and surgical plan.

Is VASER liposuction better than traditional liposuction?

VASER may offer technical advantages in selected cases, but it does not guarantee better skin tightening, faster recovery or superior results for every patient.

Can liposuction remove belly fat?

It can remove selected subcutaneous abdominal fat. However, it cannot remove visceral fat located deeper inside the abdominal cavity.

Can liposuction tighten loose abdominal skin?

Skin may contract to some degree after fat removal, but liposuction does not reliably correct significant loose skin. A tummy tuck may be more appropriate in such cases.

What is the difference between liposuction and tummy tuck surgery?

Liposuction removes selected fat deposits. A tummy tuck removes excess abdominal skin and may also repair separated abdominal muscles.

Can liposuction remove cellulite?

No. Liposuction is not a reliable treatment for cellulite and may sometimes make existing skin irregularities more noticeable.

Can liposuction remove stretch marks?

No. Stretch marks are changes within the skin and are not removed by suctioning fat beneath it.

Can liposuction create a six-pack?

Liposuction can alter fat distribution, but it cannot create abdominal muscles. Visible muscular definition depends on underlying anatomy, muscle development, fat thickness and skin quality.

Can men have liposuction?

Yes. Liposuction can be performed in suitable male patients, including treatment of the abdomen, waist, flanks and other selected areas.

Can liposuction treat gynecomastia?

Liposuction can remove fatty tissue from the male chest. However, true gynecomastia often includes glandular tissue that may require direct excision.

How much fat can safely be removed?

There is no universal amount suitable for every patient. Safe volume depends on general health, treatment areas, total aspirate, fluid management and the overall surgical plan.

Will I need a compression garment?

A compression garment is commonly recommended after liposuction. The type and duration depend on the areas treated and the extent of surgery.

When can I return to work?

This depends on the extent of treatment and your occupation. Desk-based work can generally be resumed sooner than physically demanding work.

When can I exercise?

Walking is encouraged during recovery, while strenuous exercise and heavy lifting require a longer period of restriction.

When will I see the final result?

Swelling gradually decreases over weeks and months. Final contour refinement may take several months or longer, depending on the treatment areas.

Can fat return after liposuction?

Fat cells removed during liposuction do not regenerate in the same way, but remaining fat cells can enlarge with weight gain. Maintaining a stable weight is important.

Can liposuction be repeated?

Additional liposuction may be possible in selected patients, but previous surgery can create scarring and make further treatment more complex.

Can liposuction be combined with a tummy tuck?

Yes. In suitable patients, liposuction can be combined with abdominoplasty to address both fat deposits and excess skin.

Can I have liposuction during the summer in Antalya?

Yes. However, compression garments, swelling, sun exposure and postoperative activity restrictions should be considered when planning summer surgery.

How long should I stay in Antalya after liposuction?

For many international patients undergoing substantial liposuction, I recommend approximately 3–10 days, although the appropriate period depends on the operation and recovery.

Will you follow me after I return home?

Yes. Follow-up communication continues after you leave Turkey. Photographs may be requested, and local medical assessment may be advised when necessary.

Considering Liposuction in Antalya, Turkey?

If you are considering travelling to Turkey for liposuction, the most important question should not be:

‘How many litres of fat can you remove?’

The more useful questions are:

Which areas can be improved? Is the skin sufficiently elastic? What body proportions can realistically be achieved? And is liposuction the correct operation for your anatomy?

An initial assessment can help clarify these questions before you make your travel arrangements.
