The chin plays an important role in facial proportion.
A chin that is relatively small or set back can affect the appearance of the entire profile. It may make the nose appear more prominent, reduce definition between the face and neck and create an imbalance between the upper and lower parts of the face.
I am Dr Gökhan Özerdem, Specialist in Aesthetic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Antalya, Turkey. With more than 25 years of surgical experience, I perform chin surgery for patients whose facial proportions may benefit from a carefully planned change in chin projection or shape.
Chin surgery is not simply about making the chin larger.
The relationship between the nose, lips, chin, jawline and neck must be considered together.
The objective is facial balance — not an oversized or artificial-looking chin.

What Is Chin Surgery?
Chin surgery is commonly referred to as mentoplasty or genioplasty, although these terms can refer to different surgical approaches.
Depending on the patient’s anatomy and the correction required, chin surgery may be used to alter:
- Chin projection
- Chin size
- Chin shape
- Facial profile
- Balance between the nose and chin
- Relationship between the lower face and neck
Some patients primarily require increased forward projection.
Others may have concerns about chin width, height, asymmetry or overall shape.
The appropriate operation therefore depends on the underlying anatomy rather than on one standard measurement.deeper tissues can allow orbital fat to become more prominent.

Why Is the Chin Important for Facial Balance?
The face is perceived as a whole.
For this reason, changing one structure can influence how other structures appear.
A relatively weak or retruded chin can make:
- The nose appear larger
- The lower face appear less defined
- The jawline appear weaker
- The neck appear less distinct
- The facial profile appear unbalanced
This is why I do not assess the chin in isolation.
During consultation, I consider the relationship between the forehead, nose, lips, chin, jawline and neck.
Sometimes a relatively small adjustment to the chin can produce a meaningful improvement in overall facial proportion.
Who May Be Suitable for Chin Surgery?
Chin surgery may be considered in patients who have:
- A relatively small chin
- Reduced chin projection
- A retruded chin profile
- Facial imbalance related to chin position
- An asymmetrical chin
- Dissatisfaction with chin shape
- A nose that appears disproportionately prominent partly because of limited chin projection
- Realistic expectations about what surgery can achieve
However, not every patient who dislikes their profile requires chin surgery.
The underlying cause must first be identified.
In some patients, the apparent chin problem may be related to the jaw or dental relationship rather than the chin alone.
Chin Surgery or Jaw Surgery?
An Important Distinction
A small-looking or retruded chin is not always an isolated chin problem.
Some patients have a skeletal jaw relationship that affects:
- Bite
- Lower-jaw position
- Dental alignment
- Facial proportions
In these situations, simple cosmetic chin augmentation may not address the underlying problem.
If I identify features suggesting a significant jaw or bite abnormality, further dental, orthodontic or maxillofacial assessment may be appropriate.
Chin surgery should not be used to disguise a more significant jaw problem when that problem requires a different form of treatment.
Chin Augmentation
Increasing Chin Projection
Chin augmentation is designed to increase projection or improve the contour of a relatively small chin.
Depending on the anatomy and treatment plan, different surgical methods may be considered.
The amount of augmentation should be carefully selected.
An implant or other form of correction that is too large can create an unnatural lower face and may simply replace one imbalance with another.
I therefore assess chin augmentation in relation to:
- Facial height
- Nose projection
- Lip position
- Jawline
- Neck contour
- Sex
- Existing chin width
- Soft-tissue thickness
The correct amount of projection is individual.
Chin Implant Surgery
In suitable patients, a chin implant can be used to improve projection and contour.
The implant should be selected according to the patient’s anatomy rather than choosing the same size or shape for everyone.
Factors I consider include:
- Required forward projection
- Chin width
- Existing asymmetry
- Soft-tissue thickness
- Lower facial proportions
- Relationship with the jawline
The objective is for the implant to integrate visually with the patient’s existing facial structure.
A chin implant should not look like a separate object added to the face.

Genioplasty
In selected patients, alteration of the patient’s own chin bone may be considered instead of implant-based augmentation.
This type of procedure is generally referred to as genioplasty.
A bony genioplasty can allow changes in chin position according to the individual skeletal problem.
However, not every patient requires this type of operation.
The choice between an implant, bony surgery or another approach depends on the patient’s anatomy and the type of correction required.
Chin Surgery and Rhinoplasty
Why the Nose and Chin Should Be Assessed Together
The nose and chin have an important relationship in profile aesthetics.
A patient may request rhinoplasty because they believe their nose is too prominent.
Sometimes the nose genuinely requires correction.
However, in certain patients, limited chin projection makes the nose appear more dominant than it actually is.
For this reason, I routinely consider overall facial proportions when assessing a patient for rhinoplasty.
In selected cases, improving chin projection can create better profile balance.
This does not mean that every rhinoplasty patient needs chin surgery.
It means that the nose should not be evaluated without considering the rest of the face.
Chin Surgery Before and After
Before and after photographs can help demonstrate how changes in chin projection or shape may influence facial balance.
Profile photographs can be particularly useful because the relationship between the nose, lips and chin is clearly visible from the side.
However, every patient’s facial anatomy is different.
A result achieved in one patient cannot predict or guarantee the result of another.
Previous patient photographs should therefore be viewed as examples of individual outcomes.

Can Chin Surgery and Rhinoplasty Be Performed Together?
Yes, in selected patients.
When both the nose and chin contribute significantly to profile imbalance, rhinoplasty and chin surgery may sometimes be performed during the same surgical session.
This approach is sometimes referred to as profile balancing.
However, both procedures must have a genuine indication.
I do not recommend adding chin surgery to rhinoplasty simply to perform more procedures.
If the chin is already proportionate, there is no reason to change it.
Chin Surgery and Neck Definition
The relationship between the chin and neck also influences the appearance of the lower face.
Limited chin projection can reduce the visual distinction between the face and neck.
However, poor neck definition may also be caused by:
- Localised fat beneath the chin
- Loose neck skin
- Platysma muscle changes
- Jaw anatomy
- Age-related tissue descent
Increasing chin projection cannot correct all of these problems.
Some patients may require a different procedure, such as submental liposuction or neck surgery, while others may benefit from a combination.
Again, correct diagnosis is more important than simply selecting a procedure.
Chin Surgery for Women and Men
The ideal chin is not identical in every face.
Male and female facial proportions may differ, and individual variation is considerable.
For example, some male patients may prefer a stronger or broader lower facial appearance, while excessive projection or width may appear unnatural in another face.
In women, the relationship between chin shape, jawline, lips and overall facial softness may require a different approach.
I therefore do not use one standard chin shape for every patient.
The chin should belong to the face — not to a template.
Where Are the Incisions?
The position of the incision depends on the surgical technique.
For implant-based chin augmentation, access may be planned through an incision beneath the chin or, in selected approaches, from inside the mouth.
Each method has advantages and limitations.
The most appropriate approach depends on the planned operation, implant or technique used and the patient’s anatomy.
When an external incision is used, I plan it so that it lies as discreetly as possible beneath the chin.
Anaesthesia and Hospital
The type of anaesthesia depends on the procedure being performed.
More extensive chin surgery or chin surgery combined with another operation, such as rhinoplasty, may be performed under general anaesthesia in a fully equipped hospital in Antalya.
The anaesthetic plan is determined according to the extent of surgery, the patient’s medical condition and whether other procedures are being performed.
As with all combined surgery, patient safety determines how much surgery should be undertaken during a single anaesthetic.
Recovery After Chin Surgery
Swelling is expected after chin surgery.
Bruising, tightness, temporary numbness or altered sensation may also occur.
The degree of swelling depends on the surgical technique and the extent of correction.
During the early recovery period, patients should follow instructions regarding:
- Wound care
- Oral hygiene when relevant
- Sleeping position
- Physical activity
- Medication
- Diet where necessary
- Smoking
- Pressure on the chin
The chin may initially appear more prominent than expected because of swelling.
For this reason, the early postoperative appearance should not be regarded as the final result.
When Will I See the Final Result?
A change in chin projection can be visible immediately, but swelling initially affects the appearance.
As swelling decreases, the contour becomes more defined and the chin begins to integrate more naturally with the surrounding facial structures.
Final assessment requires patience.
The tissues continue to settle over the following weeks and months.
This is particularly important when chin surgery is combined with rhinoplasty because both areas change during the healing process.
Risks and Limitations of Chin Surgery
As with any surgical procedure, chin surgery carries potential risks.
Depending on the technique, these may include:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Altered sensation or numbness
- Asymmetry
- Visible or unfavourable scarring
- Implant movement or malposition when an implant is used
- Implant-related problems
- Under-correction or over-correction
- Need for further surgery
- Anaesthetic risks where applicable
Specific risks depend on the operation being performed.
These are discussed individually during consultation and before consent for surgery.
Chin Surgery in Turkey for International Patients
Travelling to Antalya for Mentoplasty
International patients considering chin surgery can begin with a preliminary assessment before travelling to Turkey.
My team may request:
- Medical history
- Current medication
- Previous facial surgery
- Previous facial treatments
- Relevant dental or jaw history
- Photographs from several angles
For facial profile assessment, good-quality photographs from the front, side and oblique views can be particularly useful.
However, photographs do not replace physical examination.
Your final surgical plan is confirmed after I examine you personally in Antalya.
How Long Should I Stay in Antalya After Chin Surgery?
The recommended stay depends on the type of chin surgery and whether another procedure is performed at the same time.
An isolated chin augmentation may require a different postoperative schedule from a genioplasty or combined rhinoplasty and chin procedure.
For this reason, I prefer to determine the recommended length of stay individually.
International patients should remain in Antalya long enough for the necessary early postoperative checks before travelling home.
Why Choose Dr Gökhan Özerdem for Chin Surgery?
Chin surgery is not simply a question of choosing an implant size.
The surgeon must consider:
- Facial profile
- Nose projection
- Lip position
- Jawline
- Neck contour
- Chin width and height
- Soft-tissue thickness
- Facial asymmetry
- Whether the problem is truly the chin
- Whether jaw or dental assessment is required
With more than 25 years of surgical experience, I approach chin surgery as part of overall facial analysis rather than as an isolated measurement.
In patients considering both rhinoplasty and chin surgery, I pay particular attention to the relationship between the two structures.
Good profile surgery is not about making one feature perfect in isolation. It is about creating better balance between the features that are already yours.
Frequently Asked Questions About Chin Surgery
Mentoplasty is a general term used for surgery that changes the shape, size or projection of the chin. Depending on the anatomy, treatment may involve augmentation or another surgical technique.
The terminology can overlap. Mentoplasty broadly refers to cosmetic reshaping of the chin, while genioplasty commonly refers to surgical alteration of the chin bone. The appropriate procedure depends on the correction required.
There is no single measurement that determines whether a chin is ‘too small’. I assess the chin in relation to the nose, lips, jawline, neck and overall facial proportions.
Yes. Limited chin projection can make the nose appear more prominent in profile. This is why I assess chin position when evaluating rhinoplasty patients.
Not necessarily. Most importantly, there must be a genuine indication. If your chin is already well proportioned, there is no reason to change it simply because you are having rhinoplasty.
Yes, in suitable patients. When both structures contribute to profile imbalance, the procedures can sometimes be combined.
Chin implants can be appropriate for selected patients who require increased projection or contour. Implant size and shape should be selected according to the patient’s anatomy.
The objective is for the chin to remain proportionate to the rest of the face. An implant that is too large or poorly selected can look unnatural, which is why careful planning is important.
Improving chin projection can enhance the appearance of the lower facial profile in selected patients. However, it cannot correct every cause of poor jawline definition.
Not necessarily. A double chin may be related to localised fat, skin laxity, anatomy or a combination of factors. Chin surgery and submental liposuction address different problems.
If significant jaw or bite abnormalities are present, simple cosmetic chin surgery may not be the correct treatment. Further orthodontic or maxillofacial assessment may be recommended.
It depends on the surgical approach. Some procedures use an incision beneath the chin, while other approaches may use an incision inside the mouth. I discuss the planned incision before surgery.
Patients usually experience swelling, tightness and varying degrees of discomfort during the early recovery period. Appropriate postoperative medication is prescribed.
Swelling is most noticeable early in recovery and gradually decreases. Residual swelling can take longer to settle, so the final contour should not be judged immediately after surgery.
Yes. Chin surgery is performed in both men and women, but the desired shape, width and projection should respect the individual’s facial characteristics.
Yes. Chin surgery can be performed during the summer. As with any operation, postoperative instructions regarding activity, wound care and sun exposure should be followed.
This depends on the operation and whether chin surgery is combined with another procedure. I determine the recommended stay individually according to the surgical plan and early recovery.
Yes. Follow-up communication continues after you leave Turkey. Photographs or additional information may be requested, and local medical assessment may be recommended if a physical examination becomes necessary.
